My siblings do the same with their kids, it's silly as they are also quick to tell me that all kids need is` love! Xmas is a great example; they get themselves into terrible debt each year that they never really recover from just to buy crap that gets broken by end of January.

As a parent, materialism was tough for me to get over. I stopped over compensating for whatever was bothering me about myself a loong time ago. Now I try my best to give them my time when I feel shitty about my parenting skills.

I don't think that they compare your parenting to the clothes the kids are wearing. I think they do this to reflect their parenting. Everyone is doing the best that they can do. If they send their kid home with a new favorite shirt or some shoes they feel like the kid will think of them in a kinder light. Of course, that is just me, pollyanna. Parents, all of us, are doing the best we can do and we fall down quite a bit in that effort. Happy Hump Day, Sean. You get better looking all the time.
